The Major difference between UGC NET and CSIR NET

Don’t get confused between UGC NET and CSIR NET exam. Most of the aspirants have doubt whether they should apply for UGC NET or CSIR NET.

The purpose of both exams is to examine the eligibility of the post-graduate candidates for the post of an Assistant Professor or awarding JRF and both from the National Universities.

Difference between UGC NET and CSIR NET

There is always a difference between any two exams, even when the motto and the selection process is the same.  
UGC NET  and CSIR NET offers the same qualification.

*With the above differences, we can see the main difference between exams is in their stream. CSIR NET allows only science stream students whereas UGC NET welcomes all the other stream aspirants.

Subjects listed under UGC NET:
UGC NET Exam is conducted for 81 subjects. Where Paper 1 (General Aptitude) is compulsory for all the aspirants.
·        Candidates who belong from the non-science stream are eligible to choose UGC Net exam

Subjects listed under CSIR NET:
CSIR NET is conducted in 5 subjects, excluding the general aptitude, which is a compulsory paper for all the appearing candidates.
The CSIR NET Exam is conducted for the following science stream subjects -
  • Chemical Sciences
  • Earth Sciences
  • Life Sciences
  • Mathematical Sciences
  • Physical Sciences

Similarities between UGC NET and CSIR NET

The common purpose of both the exam is to determine the eligibility for lectureship and research. 


  • Exam conducting authority is same; National Testing Agency.
  • Both the exams are conducted in online mode.
  • Candidates are given 3 hrs to complete their paper.
  • The Exam is conducted twice a year June and Dec. 
  • Both follow one compulsory subject as General Aptitude.
  • No upper age limit for Assistant Professor.

CSIR NET Eligibility Criteria | Age Limit & Qualification


The most frequent question asked by CSIR NET Aspirants is “What is the CSIR NET Eligibility Criteria?”
To answer this question, we are here to help you.

CSIR NET Eligibility is measured into two criteria namely;
  • Educational Qualification
  • Age Limit

Know the CSIR NET Educational Qualification


This is the most important factor which an aspirant search for either he is eligible for the exam or not? Scroll down to know whether you are eligible or not?

Those candidates who have completed their master’s degree from science background are eligible to appear for the CSIR NET exam.

These are the following streams:

  • M.Sc.
  • Integrated BS-MS
  • BS-4 Years
  • BE/B-Tech
  • B-Pharma
  • MBBS
  • Or an Equivalent Degree.
An aspirant who have qualified their master’s degree with minimum 55% (general) and 50% for all the reserved candidates including PwD candidates.

Important Note: Candidates who are in their final year of the post-graduation are also eligible to appear in the exam.


After qualifying the above criteria, you need to meet the age limit criteria also which is:

CSIR NET Age Limit Criteria

There are different age limit criteria for JRF and for the of an Assistant Professor. Below you will get the complete age criteria.

 JRF – If you are applying for the Junior Research Fellowship then, make sure your age should not be more than 30 years of age.

Candidates who belong from the following criteria are given age relaxation up to 5 years:

  • SC/ST/OBC//female applicants: 5 years age relaxation.
  • OBC (non-creamy layer): 3 years age relaxation.

Lectureship – There are no age limit criteria for the post of an Assistant Professor.

CSIR conducts the exam in 5 main subjects. Candidates are required to meet the subject wise educational criteria also. You can check it from below:

1.      CSIR NET Life Science
As per the exam guidelines, candidates are required to complete their master’s from Life Science or with the related subject.
Eg. If you have done masters from Botany then, you are eligible to appear for this subject.

2.      Chemical Science CSIR NET Eligibility
As per CSIR Eligibility, the candidates must have valid M.Sc./BS/B-Tech or equivalent qualification in Chemistry with required percentage criteria mentioned above.
Eg. If you have done masters from Laboratory Technology then, you are eligible to appear for this subject.

3.      Earth Sciences Eligibility for CSIR NET
Those candidates who are willing to appear for the CSIR NET Earth Sciences must have a valid degree from earth Sciences or a related subject.
Eg. If you have done masters from Applied Geology then, you are eligible to appear for Earth Sciences.

4.      CSIR NET Mathematics Eligibility Criteria
To appear for the CSIR NET Mathematical Sciences, an aspirant is required to complete their post-graduation from maths or a related subject.
Eg. If you have done masters from Statistics then, you are eligible to appear for CSIR NET Mathematical Sciences.

5.      CSIR NET Physical Sciences Eligibility
Same criteria go for the Physical Sciences.
Eg. If you have done masters from Mechanical Engineering then, you are eligible to appear for Physical Sciences.

After fulfilling all the eligibility criteria you can also fill the CSIR NET form.
